What a coated run of concrete gives you

Grip where the ground drops. The orange-peel texture of a flake floor holds a wet foot, and an anti-slip additive is broadcast into the topcoat on the treads, the landing and the sloping walk so the grip is heaviest where a slip would matter most. A bare or painted step is slick in rain and worse under wet leaves; a coated one is not.

Water kept out of the concrete. On a slope more water crosses the concrete to get in, and the steps take the worst of it. The coating closes the surface, so rain runs down and off instead of soaking into the slab and freezing inside it through the winter, which is what breaks the surface off bare treads. The topcoat is UV stable, so the color does not yellow or fade on a south-facing run.

Cleaned with a hose, and built to last. The surface is seamless and non-porous, so leaf stains, mud tracked up from the yard, grill grease and pollen rinse off rather than soaking in, and there is nowhere for mold to take hold. The finish is low odor, low VOC and pet friendly. A flake floor is built to last 15 to 20 years, and when a tread that takes the most traffic finally wears, it is refreshed with a new topcoat rather than replaced; a chipped area can be re-flaked to match.

Texture, blend and topcoat, set level by level

The texture comes first on concrete with steps in it. Every flake floor has the orange-peel finish that gives grip when wet, and on a flat patio that is usually enough. On the treads, the landing and any walk that runs downhill, the anti-slip additive is broadcast into the topcoat so the grip is heavier exactly there, and the flat areas are left with the standard finish.

The blend is chosen against the house and for the steps. Epoxy flake comes in a wide range of color blends and flake sizes, from quiet grays and tans to blends with a clear color in them. On a run with steps we lean toward a blend with enough contrast in it that the edge of each tread shows in evening light, and a fine flake where the surface has to hide mud from the yard.

The topcoat is the same clear polyaspartic on every level: UV stable so it resists yellowing and fading, abrasion resistant so grit carried up the steps does not wear through it, and glossy enough to bring the color of the flake up. It is the layer that meets the weather on every tread.
