Garage floor epoxy is an industrial-grade coating bonded into the concrete slab. It is laid in layers: a primer that fuses into the ground concrete, a pigmented base coat, a solid color or flake finish, and a clear polyaspartic topcoat that resists abrasion. Oil, brake fluid, coolant and degreaser sit on top of it and wipe off.

Paint chips under jack stands and lifts under hot tires, and rubber mats trap oil and grit underneath them. Bare concrete absorbs every spill and keeps the stain. An epoxy floor bonded into the slab resists chemicals, impact and abrasion, so it holds up where the work happens.

It goes straight onto the concrete you have, after grinding and repairs, so there is no new slab to pour and nothing to tear out. Most garage floors are coated in a day.

You also choose the finish for the work, not the look. A solid color floor for a true workshop, a flake floor for a garage that is half workshop and half parking. The layers that protect the slab are the same either way, so the choice is about how you work, not about how long the floor lasts.

Resists what a workshop spills. The coating stands up to oils, chemicals, road salts and hot tire pick-up, so fluids and solvents wipe away instead of leaving a permanent map of every job. The concrete underneath is protected from moisture and water damage too.

Takes impact and is easy to keep clean. Jack stands, dropped tools and engine parts land on a surface built to resist impact and chips. The seamless, non-porous finish has nothing to trap grit, so a sweep actually clears it and a mop finishes the job.

Brighter, safer to work on. A light coated floor reflects your shop lights back into the room. The flake finish has a textured grip, and an anti-slip additive can be added to a solid color floor where you want more of it.

Solid color, flake or metallic for a working garage

Solid color epoxy. One plain, even color across the slab. For a garage that is really a workshop it is often the best choice: easy to keep clean, nothing decorative to be spoiled, and dropped parts stand out against it. It is also the easiest floor to mark out a bench area or a walkway on.

Epoxy flake. Flakes broadcast into the base coat give a textured, grippy floor that hides the marks a used garage picks up. It suits a garage that parks a car as well as holding a bench, and it is the most durable of our epoxy systems.

Metallic epoxy. A high-gloss, hand-worked resin with metallic pigments. It is an indoor finish and the least likely fit for a working garage, but it suits one that is half workshop and half show garage.

Grinding oil and old coatings out of the slab

Years of work leave oil and fluids soaked into the surface of a slab, and a coating laid over that would let go right in the middle of the bay. We diamond-grind the slab to take off the contamination, old paint and previous coatings until we reach clean, sound concrete with open pores.

Next, cracks and control joints are opened out and filled. Anything with a small hard wheel, like a trailer, a jack or a compressor, finds a joint or a crack faster than anything else, so this repair work matters as much as the coating.

Patched areas, a floor drain and the threshold are cut in by hand. If the floor has an old coating that has started lifting, it is ground off completely before anything new goes on.

How the epoxy is built up on the slab

We roll a primer onto the ground concrete, and it fuses into the slab for a bond that will not peel. Then the pigmented base coat. For solid color, a second color coat follows; for flake, flakes are broadcast into the wet base until the floor is covered.

When the base sets, loose flake is scraped back and vacuumed so the surface is even and a creeper rolls across it cleanly.

The clear polyaspartic topcoat is the last layer. It is the part that takes the abrasion, the fluids and the cleaning, and it stays clear rather than yellowing. With proper preparation, a coated working floor can still be doing its job 15 to 20 years on.
