What you get on a working garage floor

A floor that shrugs off what a working garage actually puts on it. Oil, transmission fluid, brake cleaner, fuel and antifreeze sit on the surface until they are wiped up rather than soaking into the slab and staining it permanently. Jack stands and dropped sockets mark the tool, not the floor. And it wipes clean instead of shedding gray dust over everything on your shelves.

That takes a system with body in it rather than a thin film, a topcoat chosen for chemical resistance, and enough texture that the floor is not treacherous when there is fluid on it. It is not a more expensive floor because it looks better. It is a more expensive floor because it is doing more.

What to ask anyone quoting your floor

Four questions will tell you almost everything about a garage floor quote, and they are worth asking of every quote you get, including ours.

Is the floor being ground, or etched? Grinding is mechanical preparation, etching is a chemical wash, and the difference is most of what determines whether the coating stays down.

How are the cracks and joints being treated? If the answer is that they are being coated over, they will show through and they will move.

How many coats, and what is the topcoat? A single thin application over an unprepared slab is the floor that lifts with the tire in August.

How soon does it take foot traffic, and how soon does it take a vehicle? Those are not the same answer, and how far apart they sit varies between systems, so it is worth knowing before you choose one.
