Why stain the slab instead of carpet or vinyl?

The usual office floor is carpet tile or vinyl plank over the slab. Both wear along the walking routes, both stain or lift at the edges, and both are usually pulled up and replaced at the next fit-out. A stained slab has no replacement cycle, because there is nothing laid over the concrete to wear out.

Getting the concrete ready under the old flooring

Applying the stain and sealing the floor

There is no primer and no base coat on a stained floor. The stain goes directly onto the clean, ground concrete and is left to work into it until the color has come through.

The floor is then cleaned and the clear sealer is rolled on in even coats. That topcoat is the wear layer: it takes the chairs, the foot traffic and the cleaning, and keeps the color underneath untouched.

The sheen is set at this stage. Where an entrance or a break room floor gets wet, an anti-slip additive can be added to the topcoat on request.
