What changes when the slab is coated

Nothing for damp or dirt to hide in. The coating is seamless and non-porous, and it protects the slab from moisture and water damage. There is nowhere for dirt, water, mold, bacteria or allergens to be trapped, and cleaning is a sweep and a mop with soap and water.

Tough under family life. Industrial-grade epoxy and a polyaspartic topcoat resist stains, abrasion, impact and chips, so toys, furniture legs and gym equipment do not wear through it. The finish is low odor, low VOC and pet friendly, which matters in a room the family spends time in.

A floor that can be renewed rather than replaced. A flake floor can be refreshed with a new topcoat down the line, and a damaged spot re-flaked so it blends into the rest. The topcoat is UV stable, so the color does not yellow near a window well, and a floor looked after this way is built to last 15 to 20 years.

The three finishes, and what each suits

Epoxy flake. Colored flakes broadcast into a pigmented base coat and locked under the clear topcoat. Its natural orange-peel texture gives grip, the blend is forgiving of everyday marks, and there is a wide range of color blends. It is the most common choice for a lived-in family basement.

Solid color epoxy. One uniform color under the topcoat, clean and easy to specify. It suits the laundry, the utility area and a workshop corner, and a light shade makes a basement with small windows noticeably brighter.

Metallic epoxy. A self-leveling resin with metallic mica pigments, worked by hand into the look of marble, stone, water or liquid metal, with a high-gloss finish suited to rooms lit artificially. It is the finish for a basement bar, a media room or a room you want to stand out.

Getting the slab ready, once the old floor is up

Once the carpet, laminate or tile is lifted, we grind the slab mechanically. Diamond grinders remove the adhesive, old paint, stains, dirt and residue the previous floor left behind, and open the pores of the concrete so the primer can bond. This step decides how well the new floor holds, and it is never cut short.

Cracks, holes and damaged areas are opened out, cleaned and filled flush. Tack strip holes along the walls and the marks of old partitions are filled so they do not show through.

The edges are prepared as carefully as the open floor: around the stair, the mechanical room doorway, a bathroom threshold and any built-in cabinets, so the new floor finishes cleanly wherever it stops.

Primer, color coat, flake and topcoat

We roll a primer that fuses into the ground concrete and gives the floor its bond. When it has cured the pigmented base coat goes on, and on a flake floor the flakes are broadcast into it until the whole surface is covered. For solid color a second color coat follows; for metallic the tinted resin is worked by hand while it is wet.

After the base coat cures, the excess flake is scraped off, leaving an even texture across the floor.

The last coat is the clear polyaspartic topcoat. It is abrasion resistant and glossy, it takes the wear and the cleaning, and it protects the color underneath for the life of the floor.
